Rule changes affecting the Series 7
Upcoming: shorter retake waiting periods
Under FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-18, the wait after a first or second failed attempt drops from 30 to 15 days, and after a third consecutive failure from 180 to 60 days. Chapter 1 teaches the 30- and 180-day waits in effect at publication.
SEC approves performance projections under Rule 2210
The SEC approved FINRA amendments to Rule 2210 that will allow projected performance and targeted returns in communications for investors able to evaluate them (not mass-market retail material), with written procedures, a reasonable basis and disclosures. FINRA will announce the effective date; until then the general prohibition applies. Chapter 2.
FINRA Rule 3290 effective October 25, 2027
The SEC approved FINRA Rule 3290 (Outside Activities), which replaces Rules 3270 and 3280 on October 25, 2027 (Regulatory Notice 26-20). Only investment-related outside activities will need prior written notice; outside securities transactions with selling compensation need firm approval and supervision. Until then, Rules 3270 and 3280 apply. Chapter 19.
Trump Accounts excluded from Rule 3210
Trump Accounts (IRC Section 530A) allow $5,000 a year per child, with a $1,000 federal seed for children born 2025–2028 and no withdrawals before 18. FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-13 excludes them from Rule 3210's outside-account requirements. Chapter 4.
Intraday margin standards take effect
The pattern day trader designation and the $25,000 minimum equity requirement are replaced by intraday margin standards under FINRA Rule 4210. Firms may phase in implementation through October 20, 2027. Chapter 17.
MSRB gift limit raised to $300
MSRB Rule G-20's gift limit rises from $100 to $300 for FINRA-member dealers (bank dealers and municipal advisors from December 1, 2026). Chapter 9.
FINRA gift limit raised to $300
FINRA Rule 3220 now permits gifts of up to $300 per person per year, up from $100. Chapter 19.
